5 bedroom House in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, £675,000

Ventnor office.

Tower House is an imposing sea captain's residence built in 1864 of island stone. It is situated in an elevated position overlooking the picturesque town of Ventnor in a quiet location and commands splendid sea views. The house is so called because of the tower on top, which was designed to look far out to sea, enabling the lady of the house to watch out for her sea faring husband returning from a long sea voyage.

What the vendors have to say:

Having lived in Ventnor and the surrounding area for nearly twenty years we always kept an eye on the Tower House and saw it as an iconic building. The architecture, including the belvedere (tower), is more representative of the grander buildings of Ryde.
Built in the 1860’s, the local story suggests that it was built for a wealthy Sea Captain so that his wife could view his ship on return passage along the 'Back of the Wight’ before approaching Portsmouth. It’s had a chequered history with different owners and different uses so that it became dilapidated on more than one occasion. At one time it was 9 flat lets and when we bought it, it was 3 flats and a ‘house’ but in a parlous state so we set about returning it to a grand old lady again.

Working with the best engineer and surveyor on the Island who understands the local geology, a serious amount of structural diamond drilling amongst other work was done leading to Derek Pritchard to say “ You’ve put another hundred years life on the place. “

No underpinning was required and photographic records were kept upon inspection in 2017, 2018 and again in 2020.

We are proud of what we’ve done to save it but have to move to somewhere on one level sooner than we expected. It is now a 5 bedroom house of large dimension with 2 magnificent en suite bathroom/ shower rooms. The top floor tower we have set out for family and friends to enjoy which would make an ideal air B&B let as it has its own side entrance. Bedroom 2 has a large walk in shower room, a small sitting/ reading room and a dressing room plus its own outside seating area with sea views. Also with a separate entrance if required. All in all, a versatile home with good income potential. Sea views from all floors!
